James Turrell
Through his work, artist James Turrell challenged the notion of art by experimenting with the use of light. In his studio at the Mendota Hotel in Santa Monica, he would only allow a certain amount of light to enter the room. Through his work, Turrell was able to allow people to immerse themselves in a wide variety of art forms. Usually, when a field of color goes through a loss of vision, it is because the brain has to tune out the static signal coming from the eyes. Turrell's works are based on the Ganzfeld effect and sensory deprivation. The Aten Reign is one of his main works. It features a massive Egyptian sun disk that measures 79 feet tall, and it completely encloses the rotunda. Like his previous works, Skyspace, this room features a long bench that can be used to relax and take in the light.
